The Doll Factory by Elizabeth Macneal
5.0

I do not often read historical fiction but wow, what a book this is!
I enjoyed all the perspectives from the different characters; Iris, Albie and Silas and the way the story slowly unfolded was perfect in the way it built up the very different lives of each person. Iris and her sister Rose work in a doll shop and Iris is sick of her monotonous life and when she meets Louis Frost, a painter, they strike a deal which involves her becoming a model for him in exchange for painting lessons. Silas is the local taxidermist who may be a lot more dangerous than he seems and Albie is a young boy who often brings dead animals to him for money which he is saving for a full set of teeth. The story is full of intrigue and desire and I felt really attached to Iris and Albie's characters.
There are moments where you will feel the story reaching its pressure point and many more which will make you gasp in shock.
The Gothic aspects of Victorian London add to the peculiarity of the story and it kept me hooked from the very first page. A fantastic book that will keep you on the edge of your seat till the very end.
