The suspense and mystery was a 5/5. The romance was a 1/5. Charity falls in love with a man who has terrified her, physically abused her and is domineering. There is also lots of cigarette smoking and drinking by our female protagonist. The car chase scenes were anxiety inducing and kept me on the edge of my seat. Classic Mary Stewart descriptive writing of the landscape which I do enjoy.
