As a deep romantasy/Chicago girlie I was very excited to come across this book. It was cute! I think I wanted it to be more decisive in either being fantasy or based in reality? It kind of felt like the author didn’t want to solely lean into the fantasy of this story and that made it feel a little weak, imo! The pacing was also a little weird for me. I think the fight with Mordrain should have been the climax of the story, not the falling action? It just held no tension. The third act break up was already solved (and ugh i hate a third act break up based on miscommunication!!!!) so it felt like an afterthought, rather than something that should have felt cathartic. I think overall, even though the stakes were pretty high for Emily, the writing just didn’t execute it very well.
I’d also catch myself being like “there’s no way a medieval man would say this” and then I’d have to remind myself this book is literally about a dude that was trapped as a statue for centuries. I think i just wanted more definitive writing, with higher tension- but instead this was just a fluffy, insta-lovey, syrupy read. Which sometimes you need!
