The Firebird by Susanna Kearsley
4.0

The Firebird was a page turner, even though I had to slog through a few sections. It covered a period of history I know almost nothing about and I struggled to keep up with the details. I really, really liked Anna's character and kept rooting for her.

I marked several sections in the book that prompted thought and application to my life. This lesson from Sister Xaveria was especially applicable. "It is as I once told you, Anna: that which we do not expect to see, we rarely notice" (207). I easily find myself with sensory overload so I run through life with blinders, trying to cut out all of the extra sensory input. But I find that it means I miss a lot of detail because I'm not expecting to see it. My husband will ask, "did you see the lady with the interesting hat?" I will look around and realize I didn't even see the woman, much less her interesting hat.
