Sorceline by Sylvia Douyé, Paola Antista

4.0

On the Island of Vorn, Sorceline is under heavy suspicion.

After mythical creatures & students alike turn to glass, the scholars of the elite cryptozoology school begin to whisper. Secrets are kept, jealousies rage, loyalties are tested & friendships are made & broken & re-made. Sorceline, gifted or cursed, begins to question just who, or what she is and what others have been hiding from her all along.

As mysteries begin to tangle together, Sorceline & the others investigate their own leads, each one with their own theories, some coming closer to the truth than others, none of them really seeing what is right in front of them the whole time.

A who-dun-it of magical, mythical proportions, this one kept me trying to guess & predict the answers to numerous mysteries. I really enjoyed the illustration style, the dark & rich color palette (especially the night scenes with the fireflies... stunning). A secluded atmosphere adds to the suspense & the surprises of who's who made this a fun read.

Content Notes: Recommended for the older middle grade & up, or more mature reader, as the illustrations can be dark (mythical creatures being eaten by others, a gorgon with gruesome features, etc). The relationships in the book include crushes, and what could be interpreted as a negative portrayal of adoption.
