Traitor to the Throne
by Alwyn Hamilton
This review and all my other reviews can be found at Crowded Bookshelf (www.crowdedbookshelfblog.wordpress.com)
Since the moment I put down Rebel of the Sands I felt like I needed Traitor to the Throne in my life. I wanted to be back in the Rebellion with all it's wonderful characters to find out what happens next. If you haven't read Rebel of the Sands then check out my review here, then go and read it!
For those of you who are up-to-date, in Traitor to the Throne we rejoin the Rebellion about a year after the close of Rebel of the Sands, and from the outset it looks like Amani is getting herself into trouble...again. And apparently the same can be said for the rest of the Rebellion. Although their numbers have grown, we discover that actually the Rebellion isn't doing as well as we would hope. And although we are surrounded by a host of familiar faces, a few have disappeared between the two books. The most notably absent character being Jin, who was sent on a mission taking him far away from the rebels.
The action in Traitor takes place in a new and exciting setting, seeing Amani at the heart of the Sultan's court. This gives the drama a different feel to Rebel of the Sands. There is less outright action, and the tension and drama comes more from hushed conversations and secret alliances, which is just as thrilling (if not more so) than Hamilton's wonderfully dramatic fight scenes.
Amani and Jin's relationship continues to develop throughout this book, although it is not the main focus by any stretch of the imagination, which I quite enjoy. It's nice to have that hint of romance but ultimately the Rebellion takes centre stage.
I don't want to say too much and spoil any of the exciting (and sometimes heart-wrenching) twists and turns that are in this book, but trust me when I say that you will be up at 4am convincing yourself to read 'just one more chapter.' I honestly couldn't put it down.
I always worry a little with sequels to books that I love so much that they won't live up to their predecessor. But Traitor to the Throne had everything I wanted, and a few things that I didn't even know I needed.
If you enjoyed Rebel of the Sands then you will love Traitor to the Throne. It has all the good things I enjoyed about the first book and so many twists and turns that I was excited (and sometimes scared) to find out what happens next.
