Autumn by Ali Smith

3.0

I’m not sure if I loved this, as I’m not entirely sure what I’ve read. I picked this up as I want to read the seasonal quartet over the course of the next year as the seasons change, and perhaps I was expecting a sort of study of the seasons through the exploration of a specific story. Alas, I was plunged into a strange, complicated, and confusing narrative with many underlying themes. We had decay (very on brand for autumn), Brexit, love and friendship in unusual circumstances, art, motherhood. We jumped across many timelines and story lines, and in the end I closed the book having enjoyed the experience, but perhaps not the story.

Still, the way Ali Smith writes is addictive and compelling. I’ll definitely be reading Winter, when the snow starts falling outside of my window.
