Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare

5.0

Chain of Gold begins The Last Hours series in the Shadowhunter universe. This takes place in the early 1900s London with Will and Tessa's children and their friends. If you're like me, you were extremely excited to get this story since The Infernal Devices was my favorite series. Though it took me a LONG time to actually read it, I knew I would love being back in this world meeting new characters and visiting old ones. As someone who got back into reading because of The Mortal Instruments, the Shadowhunter realm has a very special place in my heart.

We meet James and Lucie Herondale, children to Will and Tessa Herondale, and their band of friends on a multi-strain plotted story. James is the leader of the Merry Thieves, and in love with Grace Blackthorn who has recently come to London after being secluded in Idris for her whole life. Lucie is an independent storyteller who sees a ghost no one else can, not even other Herondales. Cordelia Carstairs, soon to be Lucie's parabatai, is also desperately trying to make high end connections to save her father from his impending trial. The rest of the Merry Thieves, who all have their own secrets they are wrestling with, and many other side characters. Sometimes it felt like there was honestly too many important storylines going on, and there were some that seemed like they were going somewhere and then were discarded before they could be fully fleshed out. But I'm hoping that those will be addressed in Chain of Iron.

I always enjoy the diversity in Cassandra Clare's books, and I have enjoyed getting multiple POVs as the Shadowhunter world has progressed. Chain of Gold is no exception. I am interested to see where the story goes in Chain of Iron, and to continue to learn more about the Shadowhunter world!
