Boy has water magic, in a family where rhey are a significant bloodline. Mother comes from another noble family that has blood manipulation. Mother went to school in the outside world and has a different less nationalistic view on the world. Boy questions the world the emperor has mad, father beats him. Air raid ends up coming, proving the boy and mother right. Boy ends up dying. Mother has to rebuild. I felt like I should have cared more for the characters but I just didn’t. There were a lot of deaths and a lot of horrible situations, but I didn’t really find myself being super upset by them. Halfway through the book I was just waiting for it to be over
