Joker
by Brian Azzarello
Joker was an interesting exploration of the life of a henchman in the Joker's arsenal. The unpredictability of Joker's actions effectively demonstrated his chaotic nature, harkening back to the best of the Joker's stories. The artwork by Lee Bermejo is incredible and heightened the feelings of tension and uncertainty that one expects from the best Joker stories. After reading so many Joker stories, it was refreshing to see one without a focus on the dark knight. However, the lack of an antagonistic force for Joker made him feel invincible, which lessened the tension for me. The main henchman character ("Jonny Jonny Frost") was interesting, but felt slightly held back at times. I would have preferred his character to feel more challenged and emotionally complex, to provide more of an emotional tension to the story.
Overall, I felt that this was a good short book, exploring the Joker's unpredictability very well, with gorgeous art, it is a good recommendation to any fan wanting to learn more about the clowned prince of crime.
