The Wicked Boy: The Mystery of a Victorian Child Murderer by Kate Summerscale

4.0

A very interesting read - description of life in West Ham was fascinating. The deed done by Robert and Nettie and the presentation of all the research done by the author is intriguing and extensively studied - then the WWI story and Robert’s work as a stretcher bearer and soldier and musician both at Gallipoli and in other battle fronts.
And then the life of Robert on the North Coast of NSW - simple, quiet but then he takes on the care of a young boy ….
Written very well and not in the ‘historical fiction’ style but more as a report with reflections about the actions and outcomes of the individuals in this family.
There is some repetition but I saw that as acceptable when the writer was revisiting the story from various perspectives.
