Agony's Lodestone by Laura Keating

4.0

it's really interesting that i read this a few months after reading this wretched valley by jenny kiefer, because the mechanic of a looping forest was used in both books. it was played more explicitly for scares in kiefer's work, and was accompanied by a more traditional haunting of trapped ghosts. in agony's lodestone, the looping and haunting is both more and less real - it's an expression of grief and memory. i really enjoyed how this story explored sibling dynamics and loss, all wrapped up in beautiful imagery and a strong sense of place and nature in New Brunswick, Canada, an area I wasn't familiar with. i love that 10p keeps delivering these excellent, moving, and weird horror stories!
