Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo
5.0

This was just such an adorable story. The friend who recommended it to me wasn’t sure I would like it, but I really truly did. Because of Winn-Dixie is just such a sweet southern-style story. It reads the way sitting on your front porch in your rocking chair feels. That’s the best way I can think to describe it.

I finished this book in a matter of hours. It’s not that I couldn’t put it down, it’s just that I didn’t want to. This book really drew me in with its lazy summer feel and I just couldn’t find it within myself to push it away.

I wanted to keep reading, not cause I wanted to see what happened, although I did, but rather because I loved the way the story made me feel. My perception is that sometimes us book lovers get caught up in the fantasy novels with the dark brooding prince and the dragons and the magic, and we forget the joys of home. We forget the pleasure of a summer shower, of bedtime stories and firefly hunts.

Not that there’s anything wrong with dragons and daydreams, but I think sometimes we get caught up in the glitter of it all, and the beauty of simplicity fades out of view. We can’t allow the excitement of adventure dull the process of living. When real life ceases to be good enough, that’s when the problems begin.

I think part of the reason Because of Winn-Dixie was a story I enjoyed so much was because it’s such a perfect way to refocus yourself on the things that really matter. Family, friends, and of course, your dog. Five out of five stars for this wonderful little tale.
