Tricky to rate this one. I typically base my rating on how much I enjoyed a book and wanted to keep reading it. I can't say I really "enjoyed" this book, it's ominous and sinister and the horror story wedge between reality and the supernatural was a little too narrow for comfort. If you want to know how Chuck Tingle feels about AI, you've got your answer right here I think. The commentary on the state of the entertainment industry is not subtle.
The main character Misha is put through the wringer, not just in the present but also through flashbacks that reveal the inspiration behind some of the horror monsters they're contending with in the present. Apart from Misha, though, none of the characters felt particularly well defined or fleshed out. His boyfriend was so vague I wonderedif he was part of the villainous plot multiple times. I'm glad he wasn't though.
All that being said, I think this is a good horror novel and I think it achieves what it sets out to do. Would recommend to horror fans and fans of Chuck Tingle's other books. I also think the audiobook production was great, I really liked the little full-cast segments with the sound effects and wish there had been more of that.
