The Murder of Mr. Wickham by Claudia Gray
2.0
Plot or Character Driven: Plot

Diverse cast of characters: No

As a Jane Austen reader and fan, I found this story hard to get through.  There's some charm in the new teenage characters. But the characters from the original novels are flattened into 1 dimension so they're nearly unrecognizable. They confess deep dark secrets to people they met yesterday just to move the plot forward. It doesn't help that the narration skips around multiple characters' POVs clumsily.
The author claims to have used a slur for the Roma people for the sake of historical accuracy, which would be more convincing if the book weren't packed full of inaccuracies and anachronisms. It reads like a mishmash of  regency romance, downtown abbey, and a 1930s murder mystery.
It was just entertaining enough to read to the end, but the way the magistrate, Frank Churchill, wraps up his investigation defies logic and history to make an unsatisfying pat ending.
