The Winter King by Bernard Cornwell
3.0

This is a good book with excellent writing and fantastic narration on the audiobook. However, in terms of my enjoyment overall I found it pretty middling and by the end I kind of just wanted to be done. I really liked Arthur and Merlin, but I felt like they were barely in the book. The book is told in a first person retrospective format which I usually love, but in this instance I wasn't a big fan of the execution. I didn't find Durfel or his perspective to be all that interesting and the focus was on a lot of characters and happenings I didn't have much interest in. I think I much prefer first person retrospective when it's the main character telling his or her story rather than what feels like a secondary character telling their story. However, there were some very good moments that were surprising and had tension. I also liked the different take on a lot of the characters from legend. I particularly enjoyed how Lancelot and Guinevere were portrayed. I'm not sure at this point if I will continue the series given the amount of things on my tbr that I would like to get to.
