a very good, sincere, sad, funny, insightful book. this autobiographical novel, which takes place in the great depression leading up to the start of wwii, offers insight (after insight after insight) into what growing up in a desperate and brutal environment can do to a person: it makes them desperate, and brutal. despite this, the book is not without moments of tenderness.
