In the Afterlight by Alexandra Bracken

General Comments:

All in all, a great series. Bracken is consistent and compelling in her writing and storytelling from her first book to her last. I did marathon the first two books because I felt like it, and then read the last one two weeks later (my marathoning skills are not very strong it seems). Everything was great, and so Bracken deserves a round of applause from me. Believe me, if you've read as much YA as me, you'll know how hard it is for writers to be both consistent and compelling in their stories (Like, really rare. Why does that make me think of steak?).

Ruby was not the perfect heroine, and I appreciated that. It did bother me how often she was panicky and anxious internally, because it actually made me somewhat indifferent to events that were meant to have intense emotion. I mean to say, she's often high strung throughout the book and yes, I get that her life can end at any second and so can the lives of people she loves, but when she's in action like fighting epic battles, the tone is similar to mundane things such as when she's observing things. There's not much of a difference for me, and so that's kinda why this book gets a 4 from me.

Liam was a dreamboat. Not my dreamboat, but I like him and Ruby together, and I'm glad that Bracken explored both their devotion and their insecurities for each other. Clancy, despite my villains-eh shelf, is so far my favorite villain of 2015 because his complexities and his justification for his actions made me love and hate him with a passion. Otherwise his dad, the government and every other psychotic adult were all just big ehs for me. Qualitatively, this series is amazing, and I can't wait to see what Bracken has in store for her next book.
