It was okay. The names and places were hard to follow, especially over audiobook. The ending felt a little anticlimactic, or, at the very least, it wasn't really satisfying. The romance was decent, very much a slow burn, and it did seem like a chunk of the early relationship development happened off page. But the characters weren't annoying; I wish we saw more of Tisaanah with Serel. I liked that Tisaanah was strong in a way that made sense, not exactly the trope-y "I'm just a little itty bitty girl with hardly no magic, what do you mean I've actually got this mythical insane power I've been hiding my whole life?"
Re: ReshayeI was really worried there'd be a scene where it takes over and tries to kill Max, but Tisaanah loves him so much that she's able to overpower it and regain control before he's actually harmed. It would have sucked to imply that Max just didn't love his family enough to stop them all from dying. So I was very pleasantly surprised to see it work out in a way that showed Tisaanah's inner strength and what makes her different, without reducing what Max went through.
Re: NuraI was also glad to see two female characters who definitely have a hint of jealousy and awkwardness (because of Nura being Max's ex), but it wasn't their whole thing. They still worked well together. I especially loved that Nura cared for Tisaanah after Max left, but didn't hold it against her when he returned. I don't need to see them become besties, but I hope Nura doesn't suddenly become evil because she's in love with Max.
Will keep reading the series.
Audiobook note: I usually listen at 1.4x, but had to drop down to 1.2x because the male narrator's speaking style included a loud quick inhale every other phrase and it drove me insane.

[Rape] is discussed, but happened historically and off-page. No graphic details, but it is brought up a lot. Similarly, the [adult/minor relationship] (and implicit [pedophilia]) is historical, though mentioned several times. [Animal death] mentions were brief, though Tisaanah does narrate that she ate her horse after it died .
