The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World by Robin Wall Kimmerer

5.0

I listened to Dr. Kimmerer read this story. It is a piece on gift economies and ecological economics, the illusions and dangers of scarcity created by capitalist economies, reframing to an abundance and community mindset, and learnings from nature and Indigenous culture. The quote that stuck out to me the most, attributed to an unnamed Indigenous hunter gatherer who harvested a large kill, is: “my meat is stored in the stomach of my brother”. Another thing that stuck out to me is the story of the Wendigo, a Native American humanoid monster that is created by too much greed. I think everyone can benefit from reading Dr. Kimmerer’s wisdom, with the hope of creating more gratitude and gift economies in our communities.
