My favorite part of English in high school was studying Greek mythology. When I saw this novel by Deidre Huesmann I couldn't wait to revisit those tales. They were intriguing and made me think. Well Blistered did make me think as well. I had to recall the details of the myths and place them within this modern tale that didn't start out as modern.
Azalee has been kept imprisoned underneath her family home since she was four years old. She's dirty and smelly. Her mother has taught her to be wary of all men, while neglecting to provide her with a formal education. She's fed enough to remain alive and has resigned herself to the fact that she will die in her cramped little cell.
Joel has had to educate himself about Azalee, her condition, and the circumstances of her imprisonment. He feels strongly that their destinies are intertwined. He breaks into her cramped little cell to free her, only to be met with resistance. He must convince her that it is on both their best interests to flee Illyria and find the island of Mykonos where Azalee can live among her own kind.
Several days into their escape they are joined by Niribelle, Azalee's nemesis. Azalee doesn't trust her but is unable to convince Joel that they should continue on without her. Niribelle's knowledge of the world outside Illyria is both disturbing and fascinating.
This four star book explores the caste system that exists within different cultures. These young people are unable to see past the bigotry that has been ingrained in them. They’ve all been rejected by their community and should allow that to bind them together in unity. Instead they allow it to create obstacles and distrust that could prevent them from a fresh clean start.
