The Vintage Guide to Love and Romance by Kirsty Greenwood
2.0
This was an easy holiday read. The concept of the book was cool, in that Jess and her Grandmother attempt to use old school etiquette and manners to make a man fall in love. Of course there is a shy sidekick, an arrogant but hot leading man, a boy on the side, a villain and an crazy book editor to round out the supporting character list. While some elements of this story were good fun, and quite humorous, I felt that Jess was not a particularly engaging character- she seemed immature and lost. I could see that the author was going for a Bridget Jones-esque vibe, but unlike Bridget, Jess's pratfalls and adventures felt contrived and at times unrealistic. This had potential to be a great bit of chick-lit but I think it was an average, and at times very familiar - entry into the genre.
