I think it's important to talk about animal welfare and rescue with kids at a young age. It doesn't have to be heavy-handed or detailed to be effective, and this book did a good job of leaving it up to the adult and child to have the discussion based on the images. It was just a nice "flip the transparent page" sort of book (and who doesn't like that style) that can lead to conversations about sympathy, kindness, and why we should be "nice" to animals.
