This book does exactly what the second instalment in a series should do: giving us more of what we loved from the first book while continuing to build on the setting and characters to interest us in the rest of the series. I love the worldbuilding in this series and I enjoyed the exploration further into the shady politics of Olympus, and I also really loved seeing more of the wholesome bonds between the Dimitriou sisters.

I think that Psyche is pretty good plus size representation in that she is very comfortable in her sexuality (which is pretty rare for plus size characters) but also has realistic insecurities about her body. I also thought that Eros’ character arc was fantastic and I hope we get to see him in future books really healing from the trauma he’s been put through. Aphrodite is a formidable villain for the most part although she gets a little pantomime-esque towards the end of the book. And I enjoyed the inclusion of familiar faces from Neon Gods and the introduction of some new characters who will get the spotlight in future books.

The smut is still a little cringey, but I did find it to be an improvement from the previous book (although that may be because there is either somewhat less smut or it’s somewhat more tame). I also found the ending to be kind of similar to the ending of Neon Gods?? I just hope that the rest of the books don’t end in the couple both intending to sacrifice themselves in order to resolve a political crisis without telling the other.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and I look forward to seeing where the next instalment takes us!
