I have a bit of a hot take on this book: I think I would have liked it better as a standalone. The ending of the book is far from happily ever after, but I felt it fitting for the characters, theme, and especially the emphasis put on mythology. I honestly think it would be a stronger ended if there was no book two (and I have read book two). As for the rest of the book, I enjoyed it. I love a good character degradation arc, which Ren definitely went through. However, I was annoyed by her inability to accomplish her goals and her desperation. She also felt naive despite her age. The plot was based around a simple quest, but it had good action and a good twist. I liked the world building, but I wish I had more information instead of just imagery. What I loved most about the book was the mythology and theme of death. The author wrote about the subject so well, capturing the full depth of the topic. making death dangerous and beautiful and utterly mesmerizing. Overall, I enjoyed this book but it could have been more.
