The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud
5.0

I finished this pretty fast. I love Bartimaeus, I love Nathaniel and I love the two of them together.

What kept me into this book was definitely the narration. The hopping POVs at crucial moments, Bartimeus' sassiness, the footnotes, it all kept me glued to the page. The worldbuilding is not too complex but it is good, and I hadn't met a similar magic system before, so I found it very interesting. The spirits are very colourful character, as opposed to the general drabness of the magicians, and I think the contrast made it all even better. Also, this book goes hard, pulls no punches, and it's a constant climax from pretty much the half of it until the end.

The end doesn't feel like one. Which is only fair because this is the first book in a series, which I plan to finish reading soon!
