Shady Characters: The Secret Life of Punctuation, Symbols, & Other Typographical Marks by Keith Houston

3.0

A thorough history of some of punctuation marks and symbols. It is interesting to see how far back many of these marks begin. I found it all so fascinating. It is astounding to think that we have held on to some of them for as long as we have.

It is also interesting to see how many of the marks have evolved into what we recognize them as today. There are illustrations (many images of ancient scripts) to indicate how the punctuation or symbol began and how it is recognized today.

I think what makes this a three for me is that, at times, it felt too detailed in describing a keyboard or printing plates.

An enjoyable read with a great title.
