Butcher & Blackbird by Brynne Weaver

dark funny fast-paced

4.0

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I was drawn in by the promise of two serial unalivers bonding over an annual competition to see who could first take out their target.

This book at its core is a rom com; highlighting a  possessive Butcher and a skittish Orb Weaver who are trying to rid the world of evil people whole also being evil themselves. They both realize that they're missing something in their lives, and this competition let's them be themselves with someone who can empathize with who they really are.

I honestly expected the book to feel heavier, considering the long list of trigger warnings at the beginning of the book, and some of them didn't make sense until you read it (questionable ice cream ingredients). Yes, there are parts that are gory and disgusting, but if you've watched any Game of Thrones, you probably can handle reading this.

Overall, I think the book was funny and yet hard to predict what was going to happen next. Their romance was fiery and also sweet at times, and the plot twist threw me. All of these things considered, I would recommend the book as long as you look at the content warnings beforehand.
