I had so much hope for this book series. I mean, two of my favorite hobbies/obsessions is crochet & reading and I love cozy mysteries so it was like this series was written for me specifically…or so I thought.
TLDR: Badly written book. I wish I had DNF’d it. Below is a harsh review but it was actually me being really nice & deleting most of what I really felt. Also, the audio narrator was also super annoying to me.
I have tried writing this review several time and felt like I was coming across too mean. Keep in mind that this was a first novel by this author so I’m sure her writing has improved but that doesn’t mean I plan on reading anymore of her books.
This book was badly written, imo. If there was a cliché to fit a conversation or scene, the main character would say it. The dialogue was flat and awkward and the characters were flat & cliche (sorry to use that word twice in one review but it just the best adjective for much of this book). The development of the “romantic relationship” along with all the other relationships was practically nonexistent…none of them made sense. I felt like there were holes in character development & relationships all over the place to the point that I didn’t care what happened to any of these people.
I’m not sure if the author was new to crochet or if I was just taught very differently but I was confused on some of what she said regarding crochet because it was exactly opposite of what I have learned.
There were several opportunities to add drama or tension by simply expounding on what was happening with a sentence or two of more description. Instead, she left scenes flat and boring to the point that some of the scenes that were supposed to be “action-packed” and tense were anything but that.
I rarely fall asleep while listening to a book, especially a mystery but I fell asleep 3 times in this one!!!
