Normally when I'm on vacation, I read much more than I normally do. Maybe being on vacation this time around is the reason why it took me a week and a half to finish this book. But I suspect that if I was more invested, it would have been finished much sooner.

This book has many of the weaknesses of the other books in this trilogy/quartet: the writing was mediocre (there was one paragraph where four of the sentences stated with the word "then". The other two started with "the"), the love stories were plagued with the worst kind of insta-love at first sight, none of the female characters had any sort of... character. All the other characters were very flat on the page.

Feist seems to focus on big-picture things. There was one scene (well, a couple scenes) that were truly epic in scale and contained some pretty fun inagary. He seems to focus more on world-building, and there's definitely some pretty unique and interesting world-building involved in this series.

But the series so far is falling flat for me. I'm going to take a break and read some different stuff before I start the Empire Trilogy,  but I do plan on at least starting that one!
