How Can I Help You by Laura Sims
2.5

This book took me forever to finish. Partially because a couple of library holds finally became available, but mostly because I wasn't particularly enjoying it.

The story has two narrators, neither of which I became particularly interested in. They are Margo and Patricia. The book doesn't just flip between their perspectives, but retells events from each point of view. It very rarely adds anything to the story because both women are fairly flat and predictable. By the second time this happens, you're familiar enough to guess how the other already felt about an event or interaction.

There is a point where Margo wonders if she's travelled back through time to before Patricia worked at the library and I honestly half expected that to have happened because this book recycled scenes so often.

There was no thrill for me. No suspense either. Just a very simple narrative with characters that I couldn't get excited to read.

It is a short novel that would lose nothing by cutting a third of itself away and being a short story instead.

I've heard the librarian work is relatable to people who work in libraries, so perhaps check it out if you are a person who works in a library.

I probably won't bother with this author again.
