While this work certainly has earned its place as a classic and should be read by those interested in American literature, seafaring works, and other academic endeavors, I think that most others readers could do without tacking this mammoth. 

Across the narrative there are some great moments, even a few epic moments. Yet, most of the text explores, with exquisite details, life aboard a whaler ship in the 1800's, as well as a study on early cetology.
