The Inheritance by Trisha Sakhlecha
5.0
Family first, right? Well, when there is millions of pounds at stake in inheritance and it could well be divided unequally among offspring, who knows what motivates family members regarding true loyalty? Trisha Sakhlecha’s, “The Inheritance” is a prime example of a privileged family, focusing on long held secrets, greed, sibling rivalry, love and hate and the toxic relationships it can create. Indian families are commendable for their family devotion and allegiance, especially towards their parents and I was very intrigued as to the dynamics of the Argawal family and the hold that the mother and father had over their grown up children. Hearing the story from Myra the daughter, and Zoe the daughter in law, it was intriguing learning the genuine thoughts from a true family member and an ‘outsider’.
This ‘locked in’ style thriller set on a remote Scottish island - knowing someone is a killer and someone ends up murdered - created a darkly tense, uneasy ambience that keeps the reader engrossed from start to finish. By the author’s own admission, the story was helped along during the covid lockdown, when she realised just what lengths people would go to, to protect their families, giving her the idea of testing loyalties to the extreme.
This book is the author’s third novel and I’m definitely keen to read her first two books. I like her writing style, the ambience she creates and the tension as the plot deepens. Highly recommended to psychological thriller readers!
