Middle of the Night by Riley Sager

3.0

Thank you to Edelweiss and Dutton for this eARC.

This was a good read, however, it didn't quite hit the spot as most Riley Sager books tend to. Maybe it was because this was the first Sager book to not feature a female protagonist, but there were moments where Ethan's internal similes and metaphors just didn't make sense to me.

Maybe I just wasn't meant to relate to Ethan, and that's ok. The twists were surprising, but ultimately a little underwhelming. I did enjoy it, and I think with proper expectations others will as well.

For most of this book I was seeing similarities to Home Before Dark, another paranormal tale by Sager, and this book does follow that format. Even with that knowledge of how it might all end, I was a bit disappointed by the ending.

SPOILERS ONWARD:

SpoilerSager wrote in this mysterious cult-like institution in the woods near this secretive, insular cul-de-sac neighborhood, and it felt like squandered potential to end it like he did...
