House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas

5.0

I feel like if I ever went back for my Ph.D I would honestly pitch my dissertation to be an exploration of Maas' recurring themes (trauma, coming back from grief) and how they grow and develop. I really like seeing Maas progress as a writer, and I am constantly in awe of just how much she writes and produces each year. If you like Maas, you'll continue to love her work.
I also went into this blank without having read a synopsis and I loved that - because I then wasn't expecting anything, and was genuinely surprised by something that was mentioned in the book jacket when I went back to look.
Spoiler I was glad Bryce moved away from being a party girl because I don't like reading about people who are heavily using drugs - even if it's not an addiction - but my heart also hurt for Bryce because of the trauma around the death. I loved that it ended up being a murder mystery, and I loved the grump/sunshine dynamic between Hunt and Bryce. I felt there was a good balance of "oh I bet this will happen" and red herrings which kept me going. I also was instantly interested in Aidas, and if Maas' trend of "first love interest never pans out" and that applies to Hunt not Connor, I really hope she gets with Aidas (Maas loves her scary seemingly evil love interests). I also didn't see Micah coming at all so that was a great thing. I also legit cried over Lehabah - good to know books can still make me cry

I feel like my worst reviews are books that I loved and devoured because I just want to say "I loved it!!" so if you love Maas or fantasy, check it out!
