Wake Up: Why the World Has Gone Nuts by Piers Morgan
2.0
I have been unsure of how to rate this because honestly I’m surprised that I managed to finish it so that brought the grade up a bit. Also there are real glimmers of insight and really good sections of him holding the government/celebrities to account, especially during covid. The diary aspect was a cool way to remember how things played out during covid too.
That being said, a lot of it was very reminiscent of the “old man angrily yelling at cloud” meme. The number of times he uses the word “wokery” or the term “woke brigade” is truly astounding and his bitterness at being rejected by Meghan Markle is laid out transparent for everyone to see in every paragraph that he berates her. He claims to understand debate, but then goes on to disagree and detest with most things that reasonable people wouldn’t have a problem with (eg men using papooses). There are also some worryingly intolerant/ignorant statements re trans people, mental health and aspects of racism, not to mention the worshipping of Churchill throughout.
So in all, Piers Morgan comes across as surprisingly much better than I would have thought before reading this book, but because the bar was already so low, it’s still terrible to read.
