Ride by J.C. Emery

3.0

I’m not sure if MC novels are right for me. After reading several of them, I still have mixed feelings and Ride further adds to this.

Let’s start with what I liked:
The relationship between Alex and Ryan – I liked that while there was instant attraction here there was no insalove (Thank God). Emery does a good job of building things up between these two and the tension is awesome.

Duke – He’s such a charming bad boy and aside from the one time he was an asshole to Alex, how could you not like him? I actually liked him more than Ryan and was happy to see that he gets his own book: [b:Thrash|18730386|Thrash (Bayonet Scars, #2)|J.C. The plotline/story – this had the perfect amount of drama to keep me engaged without making me want to tear my eyes out. The climax might have been somewhat predictable but predictability is not always a bad thing.

Now on to what I didn’t like:
The relationship between Alex and Ryan – I realize this is contradictory to the above so bear with me. Aside from the slow build up, Alex and Ryan’s relationship in two simple words is Fucked Up. And I think that is my biggest problem with MC novels. Ryan treats Alex like a piece of goddamn garbage
Spoilerespecially the first time they have sex
and yet, she still somehow manages to want him and ultimately fall in love with him. The guys in MC novels can be the biggest dicks to their women but its ‘okay’ because it’s part of club life. The guy can treat the girl like shit in public but behind closed doors she can lay into him. What kind of messed up logic is that? Last I checked, we were in the 21st century and if my husband treated me like Ryan treated Alex, he would no longer have his dick.

Ryan – Now, I’m all about a guy being an asshole. Some of my favorite books are with male leads that are complete, total and utter douche bags. However, Ryan’s kind of douche baggery I could not tolerate.

Alex – I couldn’t help but find her a whiney and annoying. I felt like every other page she was crying or on the verge. For someone that grew up in the mob you think she’d have thicker skin. Sadly that is not the case.

I think if it wasn’t for Ryan’s assholishness and Alex’s whininess, I probably would have given this 4 stars. Like I said, even given my complaints I still managed to enjoy the story. This is evident in the fact that I decided to read Duke’s novel ([b:Thrash|18730386|Thrash (Bayonet Scars, #2)|J.C.
