While there are a few read-alikes for this teen alternate history fantasy, it holds its own throughout the dense, not-quite 400 pages. Take the unlikely band of talented friends who excel at heists (Six of Crows), the magical splendor of European aristocracy at odds with the bigotry of late 1880s (Night Circus, Jonathan Strange, something else I can't quite remember, but with more progressive understanding of people's intersectional identities and trauma), and add puzzles (word play, mathematics, chemistry) and fast-paced action, danger just barely escaped...until it's not.  
The prose can be a little overmuch at times, but the characters, the magic system, the world itself, are all powerfully imaginative and engrossing enough to allow for some excesses of lyrical language.
