Reacher manages to hitchhike himself into a murder for hire situation in the middle of the Texas desert that even though he rejects it he offers to stay a few days to protect Carmen from her husband when he's released from jail.
Nothing goes as planned because it's Reacher of course but it was nice that he didn't pick up a new fling again in this book... he also felt more like a central character again in this one which wasn't the feeling I got in the first few books.
