Poor Man's Orange by Ruth Park
4.0

Dickensian in scope, this novel was written in 1949; however, Park's themes feel as urgent today as she explores the lives of a socially and economically disadvantaged family in Sydney. Domestic abuse, housing accessibility and affordability, education, health care: all of them are social issues investigated in this ribald, rollicking tale of love, resilience and survival.
