A castle, a princess, a talking mouse, a jealous servant and rats. This may be interesting to kids in that the author directly speaks to the reader (i.e. look up 'perfidy' in the dictionary). I wonder at some of the phrases used (eg. olfactory senses) and think some may be over the age group's reading level.
