Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging
by Louise Rennison
Today I finished reading Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison. Wish I never did. Just last month I read Pretty Little Liars and that apparently taught me nothing. How it started was this - some days ago I was checking the TV guide online to see if there was anything interesting on. On one channel the movie Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging (apparently full-frontal was not pg enough) was to be shown, or maybe it was on before that day, I forget. Anyway the name kind of caught my eye so off to Wikipedia we went where we found out that it was based on a book. Pfft, we said full of ourselves, I, as an oh so intelligent person, will not watch the movie but will read the book. Behold the fruits of pride - having to endure bad books. And why sometimes you're better off just watching the movie. Or maybe it's the fault of good writers for giving the impression that the book is always better than the movie.
Okay well turning the drama button off it's not actually THAT bad, I mean we're not talking about Twilight levels of awfulness, and it has some really funny moments. BUT, and it's a big but, there are two major problems with. Number one is that it is a book where stuff just happens, no story arc, no progress, no change, nothing. Hence nothing really happens, hence I am sitting there bored out of my skull and wishing this would end over quickly. Number two is that our main character, and pretty much everyone else, is a mean and un-likable person. I mean are good and decent characters too much to ask for? Do I have to start a petition or something?
