turtlebean 's review for:
Motherhood
by Sheila Heti
Was skeptical about this book club selection (just because as a 35 year old childless lady, I already feel saturated with related musings) and then ended up enjoying it immensely.
It is cathartic to have someone put your thoughts + emotions into words a thousand times more skillfully than you ever could. This took extra time to read because I had to stop and write down so many segments that I found moving/identifiable.
I would put this in the extraordinarily small pool of books I might label as life-changing; I feel absolved of fretting over whether to have children now. Sheila Heti has done it for me.
The only segments I found slightly less engaging were the dream bits; it's hard to muster interest in real human loved ones' dreams, let alone a fictional narrator.
