larkinj 's review for:
Rocannon's World
by Ursula K. Le Guin
Ursula Le Guin you are one of the best to ever do it.
Ok so I knew somewhere in the back of my mind that Left Hand of Darkness was in a series, but now that I've read book one, I need to read the whole series NOW.
There is so much Sci-Fi is in the world, and most of it is pretty good but finding Sci-Fi that really moves and shakes is rare, in my opinion. Le Guin is just as well known for her Fantasy series Earthsea, and especially in Rocannon's world I see the influence of fantasy elements in the narrative. The tone of this novel is one of an ancient epic through the eyes of a modern scholar without feeling hokey or too 'Star Trek' in style. Le Guin really stresses from page one the aggressive meeting of old and new, bronze age and atomic age, legend and fact. And in the format of the series, that of every book taking place on a different planet but in the same broad setup of a connected universe of hundreds of planets, she has so much room to breathe and explore concepts in her usual rigorous way.
