A retelling of the story of Mulan, this book introduces dragons, prophecies and mythical powers to the classic story of perseverance, strength, love, and sacrifice. The newer (to my knowledge) lore that was added was very well done. The complexities of the characters, particularly that nobody in this story is 100% a "good" person, really kept me engaged and guessing. Of course their fundamentally gray nature upset me and threw me off a few times, but honestly I'd prefer that over an uber predictable plotline. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series and Song's future works!
