Empire of the Vampire
by Jay Kristoff
This is an epic story, but I’m not a fan of period action and modern language mixed. I don’t mind cursing in books at all, but I like fantasy authors to bring in curses of their own beyond modern four letter words. The language is otherwise beautiful, the writing is dense. The story has plenty of action and suspense and excitement. If you like more classical heavier language you will give this book 5 stars. It’s not a speed read by any means. It’s a commitment. I gave this book 3 stars because I found myself skipping pages to cut to the chase. Kristoff’s writing is for fans of VE Schwab and Anne Rice. If you’re looking for a more Buffy vibe, keep looking. I do love the twist in the first act! This story is told as a condemned vampire hunter is forced to reveal his life story to one of the creatures he has hunted. Enjoy!
