The Clockmaker's Daughter by Kate Morton
4.0

Really this should be more like 4.5 stars. It was that good, but it still left me with a couple questions and wanting to know more so not quite a 5.

There was no going back. Time only moved in one direction. And it didn't stop. It never stopped moving, not even to let a person think. The only way back was in one's memories.

This story of time and the timelessness of love and loss over more than a century at Birchwood Manor was quite stunning. It was my first Kate Morton novel (I know....how?) and i feel compelled to find more by her. The writing was elegant and engaging, and the characters were well developed.

Told through multiple perspectives and timelines, the story zigzags across time from when Elodie finds a mysterious leather satchel back to the fateful incidents of 1862, when a group of young artists, led by Edward Radcliffe, visit Birchwood Manor for the summer. Everything in between reveals the personal histories of those who are drawn to the Manor by its mystical call. The multiple voices didn't bother me but there are lot of characters to keep track of. And when things start coming together, the payoff is grand. Without including spoilers, I loved learning about characters like Pale Joe and Ada and even Elodie herself.

I am the hands of the clock and the space in between. I am the noise you hear when you think you're hearing nothing at all. I am the light in the window that you know cannot be there. I am the stars in the dark when you feel yourself alone.
