Getaway Girl
by Tessa Bailey
This is a cute story of a couple of people in a slow-burn romance that plays out well.
First off, it wasn't what I expected. I thought from the cover and title that it would be about a girl involved in a theft ring. I don't know how I got that from the synopsis, but I was pleasantly wrong. This was a friends-to-lovers story with huge appeal.
I liked the characters a lot. Addison wasn't overdone in the sassy New York way, and Elijah wasn't overdone in the jilted lover way. Sometimes characters can turn into caricatures, and that wasn't the case here at all. Especially funny was the ba-dunk twitter account. And the headlines were helpful without being obtrusive.
So generally speaking, this had a lot going for it. My only problem was that it was pretty explicit, and I don't go for that. So I skipped about half an hour of the audiobook (possibly more since I listen at 1.5 speed) past the sex scenes. If you like that sort of thing, this walks the line of erotica. But it wasn't for me. I think the whole story could have possibly been even better without it being as graphic as it was.
Joe Hempel and Lori Prince were great on the audio. I had no issues with the narration. I do think (just throwing it out there) that it could have possibly been better cast. Joe Hempel pulled off that Charleston accent perfectly, but his voice wasn't as deep as you'd expect for a guy his size. Lori Prince was wonderfully and appropriately expressive - her acting skills are stellar - but I'm not sure she captured the snark of the character as well as she could have. Those are really picky things from someone who listens to books almost exclusively. So all in all, I can highly recommend this audiobook.
