The Philosophy of History by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel
3.0
What you're looking for here is a method and a source. It's heavy going through much of it, but there's a very real sense of satisfaction when terms like World-Historical Process and the Idea of Freedom become somewhat less obscure the deeper you dig. You read to find what Hegel was up to, and he tells you as best he can.
Mostly, though, you read Hegel so that you can read Marx and Nietzsche and all the more famous Germans that followed him. Because even if we don't read Hegel anymore, they all did. And if you don't know what they're reacting against, it's hard to see what they're advocating for.
So, that being said, this is generally not fun to read. And 200 years on, we have trouble accepting his method of ignoring most people groups and events as irrelevant to history. But asking why we react that way and what was new about his method remains interesting. It's just a grind to get to the interesting part.
