Allende is a wonderful writer but damn was this book dense AF, just paragraphs after paragraphs of straight description. The story was good, I particularly enjoyed the scenes in San Francisco and Sacramento during the gold rush but I think that's also because I grew up in the Bay Area. It felt like things jumped around a little too much for my liking in that whole chapters would be side quests from the main storyline. Read this just to get it off my TBR physical shelf as it had been languishing there for years.
